Chetan Bhagat

Chetan Bhagat (born 22 April 1974) is an Indian English language author. He is the author of three bestsellers: Five Point Someone - What not to do at IIT , One Night @ the Call Center ,The Three Mistakes of My Life. I personally feel that though his books are no classics but they are good for a one time read. He is more of a youth writer and all of his novels are based on Indian youth. His books are in a very simple language with pretty normal stories yet they have very concrete messages embedded in them for young people. The main reason behind his stupendous success is that he is one of his kind because it is hard to find an Indian writer who is writing such simple stories about characters we come across in our daily lives and I believe that many of us are able to relate to some of his characters. Moreover his stories have something for each of us like in five point someone I was able to understand the problems faced by the protagonists because I myself was facing the same kind of problems in my college. He ventures into every problem we come across in our daily lives like peer pressure etc etc. Now some of his famous works are posted below along with the links to download them.

Five Point Someone - What not to do at IIT

His first book, Five Point Someone - What not to do at IIT (May 2004) is a novel about three boys who join IIT Delhi and try to cope with the notoriously heavy workload of the institute. This book has continued to stay on the India Today bestseller list ever since its publication (190 weeks in January 2008). It won him the Society Young Achiever's award in 2004 and the Publisher's Recognition award in 2005. Rajkumar Hirani in his new film is taking the script of Five Point Someone with Aamir Khan in the lead role. This is my favorite and his best selling book among the three. In fact it is one of the highest selling English novels published in India, and remained on the bestseller list until 2007 since its release in 2004.

One Night @ the Call Center

His second book, One Night @ the Call Center, was released in India in October 2005 and continues to be a bestseller as of January 2008. The novel revolves around a group of six call center employees working in Connexions call center in the Delhi suburb of Gurgaon in Haryana. It is filled with a lot of drama with unpleasant things happening to all of the leading characters. The story takes a dramatic and decisive turn when they get a phone call from God. This is the second best-selling novel from the award winning author.

J. R. R. Tolkien

John Ronald Reuel Tolkien, (3 January 1892 – 2 September 1973) was an English writer, poet, philologist, and university professor, best known as the author of the high fantasy classic works The Hobbit andThe Lord of the Rings.

Tolkien was Rawlinson and Bosworth Professor of Anglo-Saxon at Oxford from 1925 to 1945, and Merton Professor of English Language and Literature from 1945 to 1959. He was a close friend of C. S. Lewis – they were both members of the informal literary discussion group known as the Inklings. Tolkien was appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth II on 28 March 1972.

After his death, Tolkien's son, Christopher, published a series of works based on his father's extensive notes and unpublished manuscripts, including The Silmarillion. These, together with The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, form a connected body of tales, poems, fictional histories, invented languages, and literary essays about an imagined world called Arda, and Middle-earth within it. Between 1951 and 1955 Tolkien applied the word legendarium to the larger part of these writings.

While many other authors had published works of fantasy before Tolkien, the great success of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings when they were published in paperback in the United States led directly to a popular resurgence of the genre. This has caused Tolkien to be popularly identified as the "father" of modern fantasy literature—or more precisely, high fantasy. Tolkien's writings have inspired many other works of fantasy and have had a lasting effect on the entire field. In 2008, The Times ranked him sixth on a list of 'The 50 greatest British writers since 1945.

Now some of his famous works are posted below along with the links to download them.

The Silmarillion

The Silmarillion is a collection of J. R. R. Tolkien's mythopoeic works, edited and published posthumously by his son Christopher Tolkien in 1977, with assistance from Guy Gavriel Kay, who later became a noted fantasy writer. The Silmarillion, along with J. R. R. Tolkien's other works, forms a comprehensive, yet incomplete, narrative that describes the universe of Middle-earth within whichThe Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings take place. The History of Middle-earth is a twelve-volume examination of the writing and revisions of The Lord of the Rings and The Silmarillion by looking into J. R. R. Tolkien's rough drafts and by commentary by Christopher Tolkien.

The Silmarillion comprises five parts. The first part, Ainulindalë, tells of the creation of Eä, the world.Valaquenta, the second part, gives a description of the Valar and Maiar, the supernatural powers in Eä. The next section, Quenta Silmarillion, which forms the bulk of the collection, chronicles the history of the events before and during the First Age. The fourth part, Akallabêth, relates the history of the Downfall of Númenor and its people, which takes place in the Second Age. The final part, Of the Rings of Power and the Third Age, is a brief account of the circumstances which led to and were presented in The Lord of the Rings.

The five parts were initially separate works, but it was the elder Tolkien's express wish that they be published together. Because J. R. R. Tolkien died before he finished revising the various legends, Christopher gathered material from his father's older writings to fill out the book. In a few cases, this meant that he had to devise completely new material in order to resolve gaps and inconsistencies in the narrative.

It's slow. It's methodical. It's good. But you really need to be in the right frame of mind at the time you start reading it or you'll never make it thought.

My advice, don't read it all in one sitting. Read a chapter here and a chapter there and you'll have an easier time with it. Read other material in between and it'll lighten the load.

That's my opinion. The link to download the book is :

The Hobbit

The Hobbit, or There and Back Again is an award-winning fantasy novel and children's book by J. R. R. Tolkien. The Hobbit is set in a time "between the dawn of Færie and the Dominion of Men", and follows the quest of home-loving Bilbo Baggins (the titular "Hobbit") to win his share of the treasure guarded by the dragon, Smaug. His journey takes him from light-hearted, rural surroundings into darker, deeper territory, meeting diverse denizens of the Wilderland along the way. By accepting the disreputable, romantic, fey and adventurous side of his nature (the "Tookish" side) and applying his wits and common sense, Bilbo develops a new level of maturity, competence and wisdom.

The Lord of the Rings

The Lord of the Rings is an epic high fantasy novel.

The story began as a sequel to The Hobbit. The title of the book refers to the story's main antagonist, the Dark Lord Sauron, who had in an earlier age created the One Ring that rules the other Rings of Power, as the ultimate weapon in his campaign to conquer and rule all of Middle-earth. From quiet beginnings in the Shire, a hobbit land not unlike the English countryside, the story ranges across Middle-earth following the course of the War of the Ring through the eyes of its characters, most notably the hobbits, Frodo Baggins, Samwise Gamgee (Sam), Meriadoc Brandybuck (Merry) and Peregrin Took (Pippin). The lands of Middle-earth are populated by Men (humans) and other humanoid races (Hobbits, Elves, Dwarves, and Orcs), as well as many other creatures, both real and fantastic (Ents, Wargs, Balrogs, Trolls, etc.).

DAN BROWN

Dan Brown (born June 22, 1964) is an American author of thriller fiction, best known for the 2003 bestselling novel, The Da Vinci Code and the 2000 bestselling novel, Angels & Demons.

Brown is interested in cryptography, keys, and codes, which are a recurring theme in his stories. Currently his novels have been translated into more than 40 languages.

Although many perceive Brown's books as anti-Christian, Brown states on his website that he is a Christian and says of his book The Da Vinci Code that it is simply "an entertaining story that promotes spiritual discussion and debate" and suggests that the book may be used "as a positive catalyst for introspection and exploration of our faith".

Now I will post each of his novel one by one.

Digital fortress

Digital fortress (1998) is story of Susan Fletcher, a brilliant mathematician and head of the National Security Agency's (NSA's) cryptography division, finds herself faced with an unbreakable code named "Digital Fortress", that TRANSLTR cannot break. TRANSLTR is the NSA's 3 million processor supercomputer that can crack encrypted data in a short amount of time, with some codes broken in more than 3 hours, others within minutes. The code of "Digital Fortress" is written by Japanese cryptographer Ensei Tankado, a fired employee of the NSA, who is displeased with the agency's intrusion into people's privacy. Tankado posts a copy of Digital Fortress on his website, encrypted with itself. Tankado auctions the passkey to unlock the algorithm on his website, threatening that his accomplice "North Dakota" will release the algorithm for free if he dies. Tankado is found dead in Seville, Spain. Fletcher, along with her fiancé, David Becker, a skilled linguist with eidetic memory, must find a solution to stop the spread of the code.

It also shares many stylistic elements with the better known novel, such as conspiracies of secret societies, a single-day time frame and the Roman Catholic Church. The story involves a conflict between an ancient group, the Illuminati, and the Roman Catholic Church. A film adaptation is due for release on May 15, 2009.

Deception point

Deception point is a story of Intelligence Analyst Rachel Sexton who is in her mid-thirties, is single, and works for the NRO (National Reconnaissance Office). Her father, Senator Sedgewick Sexton, is a popular presidential candidate surpassing the incumbent President of the United States Zachary Herney. The President sends her to the Arctic as part of a team of experts to confirm and authenticate findings made by NASA deep within the Milne Ice Shelf. NASA's new Earth Observation System (EOS,) a collection of satellites constantly monitoring the globe for signs of large-scale change, has found an extremely dense spot in the Milne Ice Shelf. NASA discovers a very dense meteorite. In it are fossils of bugs very similar to--but not the same as--species on earth. NASA claims this as proof of extraterrestrial life. This find is something NASA needs desperately, as the agency’s success rate on other fronts has put it in a bad light. Senator Sexton uses this as an example of government overspending and failure to further his campaign.

A beautiful, brilliant attorney, she becomes the foil for a plot by Michael Moretti, the rising star of one of the most powerful organized crime families in America. Moretti is on trial for murder and conspiracy, and Robert Di Silva is prosecuting. Within four hours, Jennifer is fired, ruined, and faces disbarment. She can't find a job anywhere until Adam Warner comes into her life. He's been asked to investigate her involvement with Moretti, and recommend for or against her being thrown out of the legal profession in disgrace.

Although Warner decides Parker isn't guilty of taking a bribe, what follows is a terrible struggle on Jennifer's part, to survive in New York City. Blackballed by every law firm in the country, Jennifer takes on a hopeless case. She will face Robert Di Silva, the brilliant District Attorney who has vowed to destroy her for her part in the fiasco with Michael Moretti. When she wins the case, Moretti decides he wants her as the Family consigliere (a mafia lawyer).

Adam Warner, married and also an attorney, has a strict rule against affairs, being married to Mary Beth, the niece of the senior partner in a very powerful New York law firm. Warner is being groomed for the Senate, with possibly a White House destination, but he can't help falling in love with Jennifer. When Adam tells Jennifer that Mary Beth has asked for a divorce, Jennifer meets with Warner's wife. Being so close to the Senate election, the two women decide it's best for Adam to wait until after the election. Mary Beth goes to bed one last time with Adam, and tricks him into making her pregnant.

Adam learns that his wife is pregnant, wins the election, and tells Jennifer that he must stay married for "a little while longer," never discovering that Jennifer, too, is pregnant. They break up, and Jennifer decides to keep the baby and become a single mom.

When her son is kidnapped, Jennifer, in desperation, turns to Michael Moretti for help. Moretti is handsome, powerful, and dangerous, and eventually seduces Jennifer. This begins a love triangle that sweeps across America's political and organized crime landscape as Jennifer, Adam, and Michael rise to become the most powerful figures in the country.

Her life soon turned into a nightmare when her son dies, due to a head injury. After the death, Jennifer's life falls apart as Michael Moretti plan to kill Adam and she had to stop him. She ended up getting shot by Michael, who finally knew of her affair with the politician, and fighting for her life. Near the end of the story, Adam Warner learns that he had a son, by Jennifer, but it was too late, because he was made the president of the United States

In his earlier works, Sheldon is a master of plot twists, complications, and the emotional ups and downs of people's lives. "Rage of Angels" is one of his rare stories that does not have a happy ending. Despite being a somewhat pessimistic book, it's a fascinating journey into the complexities of crime and punishment, politics, and corruption. Sheldon masterfully portrays the brilliant legal strategies that make Jennifer Parker come to life as a fully believable criminal defense lawyer.

If Tomorrow Comes

If Tomorrow Comes is a 1985 novel by Sidney Sheldon.

Plot

Tracy Whitney is on top of the world. Young, beautiful, and intelligent, she is about to marry into wealth and glamour. A late-night phone call from New Orleans, informs her that her mother has committed suicide. Betrayed by her own innocence, Tracy winds up in prison, framed by a ruthless Mafia gang, abandoned by the man she loves, and facing a year or two as the "wife" of Ernestine Littlechap (Ernie), who later helps Tracy to take revenge against Pope Perry and the Judge.

Beautiful, smart, and idealistic, Tracy enters a life of hardship and violence and vows revenge against all those who harmed her. Eventually, she becomes the nanny for the prison warden's young daughter, a job that leads to her release from jail. Desperate, unable to find work as an ex-con, she turns to a well-known New York City jewelry store owner (and fence) who helps her make some fast money in a jewel heist. Escaping with the goods, Tracy has an encounter with Jeff Stevens, a master con man.

Stevens steals the jewels from Tracy, who realizes she's been had. She then cons Jeff, taking back her prize, and decides that Jeff will become another future victim of her brilliant revenge schemes. Not long after, Tracy travels to England and is introduced to Gunther Hartog, a world-class fence for valuable stolen property. Thus begins her life as one of the world's cleverest criminals. Sheldon invents some brilliant schemes, filled with humor and ingenuity (although they likely wouldn't work in reality), that Tracy pursues as she encounters Jeff Stevens again and again. Although they "hate each other," we begin to see their growing appreciation, respect, admiration, and enjoyment of their mutual competition.

Interpol, the FBI, and police departments and insurance companies around the world are trying to prevent Tracy from stealing priceless jewels, paintings, or other prizes. In every case they fail. Only Daniel Cooper, a plain-looking sociopath and insurance investigator seems capable of matching Tracy's brilliance.

Unusually, the book presents the nominal "villains" -- Tracy and Jeff -- as sympathetic and kind-hearted, while the pursuing detective, Cooper, is presented as almost psychotic; this could be a reversal of the classic "bloodhound detective" chasing a smart and elusive enemy, as in The Day of the Jackal. There was also a TV miniseries based on the book.

In the end, Tracy and Jeff plan to meet with each other, and live together in Brazil. The story ends with a stranger Maximilian asking to be with acquaintances with Tracy.

Tell Me Your Dreams

Tell Me Your Dreams is a 1998 novel by the American writer Sidney Sheldon.

Plot summary

The central character of the book is Ashley Patterson, an introverted workaholic, and her co-workers, Toni Prescott, an outgoing singer and dancer, and shy artist Alette Peters.

The three women do not get along well because of their dissimilar natures. Toni and Alette generally maintain a friendship, with Alette a calming influence, but Toni dislikes Ashley and criticizes her harshly. All three women have issues with their mothers having told them they'd never amount to anything.

Ashley fears that somebody is following her. She's found her house lights turned on when she comes home from work, her personal effects in disarray, and someone has written "You will die" on her mirror with a lipstick. She thinks someone's broken into her house. She requests a police escort, but the next morning, the police officer assigned to this duty is found dead in her apartment. Two other murders have already taken place, with an identical pattern. All the murdered men had been castrated and were having sex before being murdered.Evidence points to the same woman being involved in all three cases. When a gift from one of the murdered men to Toni is found in Ashley's things, she is identified as the killer and arrested. At this point, it is revealed that the three women are three selves in a multiple personality group.

Ashley’s father persuades an attorney friend to represent Ashley. The second half of the novel deals with the trial, complete with endless squabbling between opposing psychiatrists as to whether or not MPD is real. Ashley is committed to an insane asylum and in the course of therapy is introduced to her two "alters" and relives the horrific events that shattered her mind. She was sexually abused by her father during childhood and this made her to develope a strong hatred towards men.

True to Syndney Sheldon's mysterious style , the story has a shocking ending.

The Sky Is Falling

The Sky Is Falling is a 2001 novel by Sidney Sheldon.

Plot Summary

The main character to this book is Dana Evans, an anchorwoman for the press, who was also featured, though not as a main character, in another of Sidney Sheldon's book, The Best Laid Plans.

The story starts off with a prologue, a mysterious auction that involves a huge amount of money. Dana Evans had just came back from Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina. She is rushing to a meeting with the last member of the Winthrop family, Gary Winthrop. The story starts to get complicated when, a few hours after the interview with Dana, Gary Winthrop was shot and killed by some thieves who were, supposedly, stealing some paintings. Although most viewed this tragic row of events as accidents, the rest of the Winthrop family were killed in a series of suspicious "accidents" a few months beforehand, Dana was the exception. Taylor and Madeline Winthrop, Gary's parents, perished in a fire that burnt down their house, Paul Winthrop died when his car drove off a cliff, and Julie Winthrop died in a skiing accident. Dana couldn't believe that accidents had wiped out one of the most prominent families in the world. She began to investigate, delving deeper and deeper into the family's secrets.
